Municipality of Almere: online and offline campaign SSSTOP Street harassment

The combination of off- and online campaigns created more awareness within the municipality of Almere around street harassment

About SSSTOP Street harassment

In May 2019, the municipality of Almere conducted research on street harassment. In it, one in four Almere residents said they have experienced some form of street harassment.

The municipality wants to combat street harassment and therefore started the SSSTOP campaign. On the website, victims can leave an anonymous report. In this way, hot times and hot places are mapped and surveillance can target them.

The challenge: raising awareness of street harassmentcreate

Everyone should be able to walk the streets safely, regardless of time of day, choice of clothing and/or sexual orientation. The campaign should create awareness about street harassment, give young people in Almere an action perspective and encourage them to report street harassment.

We also want to increase (brand) awareness of SSSTOP and build a constituency.

Our approach: online and offline campaign(s)

After the website went live in 2019, an offline campaign was held to introduce Almere residents to SSSTOP. Among other things, the poisonous green snake was sprayed on the streets with chalk graffiti and the poster could be seen in various places around the city: in buses, on bus shelters and sandwich boards.

The campaign was then followed up online via social media. Using organic and sponsored posts on Instagram and Facebook and a payed ad on Snapchat, we tried to reach as many young people in Almere as possible. Ally Life also helped: they created a cool video to find out what Almere residents really think about street harassment. And the municipality got help from several youth organisations to spread their message.

"Mediatic created a strong visual brand for us and ensured in creative ways that we have already reached many Almereans with our campaign against street harassment."

- Madeleine van Breugel, senior advisor Safety Municipality Almere -

The result: dozens of reports

After the launch of the website and attention on social media, the municipality of Almere already received a total of 53 reports. As a result, the municipality moved a youth meeting place and deployed extra enforcement at a place where a lot of nuisance was reported.
