No inspiration? This is how you get new content ideas
Recognisable? You enthusiastically start filling your social media channels, website and blog. Plenty of ideas! But suddenly there is the dreaded moment: you are out of inspiration! Now what? It is important to post regularly, that way you stay 'on top of mind' with your followers. But don't 'post for the sake of posting'. In this blog, you will read how to get new, good content ideas.
General tips
First, we’ll give you some general tips on how to find content inspiration; further on in the blog, you’ll find specific tips for a number of social media platforms.
– Ask yourself: do I still know my customers? You don’t create content for yourself, but for your customers or followers. If you’re no longer sure who your customers are and what matters to them, consider interviewing a few of them.
– Analyse the keywords on your site: look at the terms visitors entered into your site’s search bar to see what they’re looking for.
– Take a look at the competition: it’s OK to take a peek! Then, of course, put your own spin on it.
– Stay up to date: many fields are constantly evolving. Is yours a dynamic sector? If so, content is there for the taking if you keep abreast of these developments. For example, by attending events. You’ll hear the latest news about your field and can share with your followers that you were there. That’s how we posted this message on LinkedIn. Other ways to stay up to date with developments in your sector include following relevant hashtags and subscribing to newsletters from trade publications.
– Ask your followers: who knows better what followers want to see than your followers themselves? For example, run a poll asking what sort of content visitors find most interesting.
– Create a regular feature: for example, ‘Friday’s Question’, where you ask your followers a question to get to know them better. This allows you to tailor your content even more effectively to your target audience, and for your followers, it can be a reason to return to your channel.
– Infographic: sharing figures in a text can quickly become ‘dry stuff’. So why not present them in a more engaging format, such as an infographic?
Long-form vs short-form
‘Short but sweet’ seems to be a golden rule of content creation. After all, you often hear that ‘people can’t concentrate anymore’. It’s true – there’s a good chance that WhatsApp messages will pop up whilst someone is viewing or listening to your content, that other tabs are open, and that an email pop-up is demanding attention. But people don’t ignore everything that’s long: podcasts, Netflix series and (audio)books, for example, are still very popular.
So dare to post long content too and see what it does. Social media channels are generally for short content but longer content on your website, for example, can do well.

Instagram
On Instagram, it's largely about 'the picture' and interacting with your followers. Some ideas for content forms on Instagram:
- 'Caption this': post a cute photo and ask your followers to come up with a caption.
- Sneek peek of a new product coming up. You can unveil it in a live video.
-Tutorials: give people inspiration or explanations on how to use your product. Through a video or a photo carousel, for example.
- Put photos of your followers in the spotlight: do a round of Instagram and see what has been posted under your brand/company's hashtag. If there are nice photos among them . You can possibly launch a special hashtag that followers can use to post their photos under. You can also link a win campaign to this.
LinkedIn
– Mock-up: you create a mock-up during the design phase of your product. It’s a realistic, graphical representation of what the product will look like when it’s finished. This can sometimes be done for a service too – for example, a mock-up of the obstacles in the obstacle course you’re organising.
– Involve your followers in decisions: do they prefer packaging A or B?
– Predict the future of your industry: get your crystal ball out. What opportunities and obstacles do you see for the sector in which you operate?

TikTok
TikTok is ideal if you want to reach a younger audience. The largest group of users is aged between 16 and 24, and the number of TikTok users up to the age of 34 is on the rise. You don’t necessarily need a lot of followers; thanks to a unique algorithm, even smaller businesses can stand out. It’s best to set up a Pro account. This will allow you to view statistics, amongst other things, to see how your content is performing. Don’t forget to add subtitles to spoken text, as users often watch your videos with the sound on their phones turned off. A few ideas:
– Challenge: jump on an existing challenge – there are loads of them on TikTok – to increase your chances of users finding you. Or come up with your own challenge! Who knows, lots of TikTok users might pick it up!
– Customer reviews: a positive review can convince a hesitant user to become a customer.
– Special days: many topics and products have their own dedicated day, often with an associated hashtag. Think of Earth Day, Women’s Day or Mental Health Awareness Day.
