An effective PR strategy in 5 steps
You want to raise awareness of your organisation's mission and story. This is a long-term process, so drawing up a solid PR strategy helps. We take you through the creation of an effective strategic PR plan.
1. Define your objectives
The starting point of strategic PR is to set clear goals. Concrete and clear objectives are motivating and give you something to hold on to. Think about why you want to use public relations and what you want to achieve with it; do you want to increase your brand awareness as an expert in your field? Or do you want to become more attractive to (potential) clients and employees? Whatever your goal, a strategic plan forces you to get your objectives clear.
2. Identify your target audiences
The next step in your PR strategy is to identify your target audience. Before you start creating media releases, think about who needs to read your message. Once you have a clear idea of who you want to reach, you can research through which media you can best do this.
3. Formulate key messages
By now you know why you are getting started with public relations and who you are going to target your communication at. Then you start working on what message you want to convey. What will your story be and why is it interesting for your target audience? Core messages are indispensable for a successful PR strategy. A good core message conveys a feeling and informs, inspires and activates readers. Realise that, as a company, you cannot be the best at everything. It is therefore important to focus on a number of areas of expertise or themes to which you can relate your core messages.
4. Select the right resources
Now that you have determined the basis for your PR strategy, you can start working on how to get the attention of your key target audience in a structured way. What hooks can you use to get to the media and what resources go with them? Stand-alone, irregular media approaches often do not deliver the desired attention. If you appear in the media continuously and regularly, your story is more likely to stick. Do this through a mix of means. Think for instance of press releases, blogs, opinion polls, podcasts or catch-ups on topical news.
5. Make a schedule
Planning is the final step of a successful PR strategy. When will you go out with what message and why? Are there special days in the year that you can use as news hooks? In addition, keep a close eye on the news on a daily basis to spot ad hoc media opportunities.
