A lot of time and money goes into optimising your website for Google. There are hundreds of tips online on how to make your website more findable, but it is important to start with a good foundation. In this blog, here are three tips that will help you lay a good foundation for a better position in Google.

Tip 1: Content marketing

In recent years, Google has been placing increasing value on strong content. So not pages written based on keywords. These are articles, blogs and white papers with topics people want to read about. When rating pages, Google looks at the relevance of the text in relation to the rest of the site and how well it is read by visitors.

In content marketing, it is important to know who your audience is and what they are interested in. Blogs or how-to's that answer visitors' questions often do well. How do you find out what your readers want to know more about? Ask your customer service or webcare team what questions they often receive or ask your visitors directly. You can do this via social media, for example. You can create a poll on Facebook in which you suggest three topics for potential blogs to your followers, which they can then vote on.

Tip 2: Write SEO pages

Writing landing pages, based on keywords you want to be found better on, is still a good way to improve your findability. But it is important to do it the right way. You can no longer write a page where you repeat the keyword ten times without thinking about context or consistency. If you do that, chances are you will be penalised hard by Google and your search engine ranking will actually plummet.

So how should you do it? It is important to mention the keyword you want to be found better on in the title of your page. Preferably at the front of the title. Then you also use the word in the first sentence of the introduction. After that, let your keyword recur once more in a subheading and once or twice in the running text. It is also important to use images on your SEO page, at least one, preferably two. Give these images names that include the keyword. Summaries, infographics and videos usually also contribute to a higher ranking in Google, so use these especially.

Tip 3: Link building

Building a strong link profile is essential when you want to improve your position in Google. This is not just about links that other sites post to your website, but also the internal links that you post yourself. Within your own site, try to link to other blogs, SEO pages or product pages in blogs. This makes it easier for Google to find (index) your pages and better determine their relevance.

External links are even more important, but remember here: quality over quantity. A link on a home page or on a website that hardly gets any traffic is not going to do much for your site. In fact, if this is a site with no or poor content, it could even have a negative impact on your ranking. So watch out for this. Approach blogs and news sites that write about the same topics as you. Google considers these links valuable and this can then lead to a higher ranking.

For all these three tips, it is important that you repeat them regularly. Google always wants to show the latest and most relevant information, so you need to provide that. Therefore, try to write new blogs, white papers and SEO pages on a weekly basis. If you cannot, we will be happy to help you with it. Good luck!
